Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a key role in every sphere of the present society. Along with the recent measures to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, digitalization/automation is further promoted. A number of positive effects on human lives are emanating from ICT. Such positive effects include production of huge data which is of great help to formulate evidence-based policies, human power saving operations in factories and offices, large volume of bank transactions, generating employment, alleviating poverty and promoting social movements, and more. In addition, the conference will also consider the challenges that ICT imposes on our lives such as cyber security.
Furthermore, gender inequality will be tackled at the KCAW 2021. The UN/International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has indicated that there is a 17% gender gap in the Internet use globally. This means that 250 million fewer women are online than men.
The low participation of girls and women in science field has lead STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education for them to receive high attention.
ICT is a potent force of development. In order to attain inclusive development and the principle of the SDGs to “leave no one behind,” the conference will discuss good practices of empowering women in NGOs and the private sector in Asia and the Pacific region.

KFAW is looking for presenters who are willing to take part in the 32nd Kitakyushu Conference on Asian Women (KCAW 2021), to be held in Fall 2021. The conference theme is going to be: ICT and women: working toward an equal society. Please refer to the detailed conference theme provided towards the end of this page.
Successful candidates will be asked to give a 10-minute presentation on the theme of ICT and Women, with a focus on at least one of the following subtopics:
- Impact of ICT on changes/convenience of daily lives
- Impact of ICT on education or employment
- Impact of ICT on social connectivity among people (e.g., #ME TOO)
The language of the presentation is to be either Japanese or English.

- Applications from those aged below 40 are strongly encouraged.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have brought about Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, and Digital Transformation (DX), giving profound impacts on all aspects of our daily lives. For example, ICTs contribute to the expansion of social and economic development, employment, and social movements. In addition, the use of ICTs became essential to our lives in 2020 as the world adapts to working in the “new normal” in the COVID-19 pandemic. More than ever before, people rely on ICTs for information, work, conducting business, accessing education, etc.
While the pandemic highlighted the importance of ICTs for the continued functioning of societies, it has also uncovered the alarming digital inequalities between and within countries, accentuating the disparity between those who are able to make the most of ICTs and those who are not. In fact, differentiated socioeconomic impacts of the digital divide on men and women have become more prominent.
Equal participation of women is imperative in all fields involving ICTs. As such, education and professional development of women and girls in STEM fields (i.e., science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) are also urgently called for.
At KCAW 2021, we will discuss how we can promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in the ever-developing digitalized information society.

The Kitakyushu Forum on Asian Women (KFAW) is looking for three Foreign Correspondents (FCs) to take part in information collection and analysis on gender equality and women’s empowerment. The term of appointment is from July 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022. Interested candidates must submit their applications by May 31, 2021.
