From August 26 to September 9, 2002, the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa. Commonly referred to as the “Johannesburg Summit”, the WSSD is being staged to confirm the progress of the Agenda 21 plan of action. This plan was adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) (the Earth Summit) held 10 years ago in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It will also provide a venue for discussing ways to deal with new problems that have arisen since then.
