6.Symposium Objective     This symposium aims to improve the understanding of and promote entrepreneurship by women in Japan and other countries in Asia, and demonstrate its link to the stimulation of economies and women’s empowerment. This will be achieved by studying the current status and actual conditions of women and entrepreneurship, as well as the ways to support women entrepreneurs in Japan and other Asian countries.
7.Theme “Entrepreneurship: An Emerging Source of Employment for Women”
Entrepreneurship is a style of work that has been noted by both men and women as a way to fully demonstrate his or her capabilities and experience. For women, in particular, entrepreneurship highlights the advantages of flexibility and is unconcerned with age or sex.
It is crucial for the socio-economic revitalization of both Japan and other Asian countries to promote women’s participation in the economy and society as entrepreneurs where they can fully demonstrate their capabilities and experiences.
However, women face a number of issues, including cases where a woman may have less work experience than her male counterpart, and women who try to both work and fulfil household duties, such as raising children or doing housework.
At this international symposium, Ms. Keiko Osaki-Tomita of the United Nations will introduce some of the measures being taken by the UN to support entrepreneurship based on the Midterm Review Meeting of the Evidence and Data for Gender Equality Initiative, a UN meeting of experts on statistics that will be held from December 3 to 5, 2014 in Kitakyushu. Ms. Eriko Yamaguchi of Motherhouse Co. & Ltd., a company founded to sell bags in Japan and Taiwan, Province of China, that have been produced in factories in Bangladesh, will speak with the audience about her story as a women entrepreneur.
Information on the current state of women entrepreneurs in the Philippines, a country known globally for its progressive stance on women’s activities, will be presented, and a panel discussion will be held, which will add information about activities to support women entrepreneurs in Indonesia, as well as the support and activities being promoted for women entrepreneurs both in Kitakyushu and Japan.
